My friend failed his first web developer interview!
Received a text from a friend who I mentor that he’d finally landed his first interview!
2 days later he sent quite an emotional text saying he’d been rejected!
Company’s feedback was: Unfortunately, not a good fit.
He couldn’t understand what they meant by “not a good fit” because they also said he was their “top pick and very competent person”.
I rang him around 5pm yesterday and explained him what their feedback really meant.., he actually understood it all! Silly stuff.
You might ask, why am I telling you all this?
Well, I know there’s a good chance you’ll also be interviewing one day and you too might receive a generic feedback like this.
If you don’t already know.. Let me tell you what “not a good fit” actually means.
They all sound different but the deep meaning for the rejection is always the same!
— You didn’t smile enough
— You looked awkward
— Your way of talking wasn’t nice
— You looked intimidating
— Team wouldn’t like you
— You were not like other members of the team
— We felt uncomfortable
It’s not really about the skills.. but about who YOU are!
Wanna fix it?
Simplest thing is to PRETEND you’re talking to a bunch of kids, don’t look threatening, use calm hand gestures, show some sweetness in your voice and smile a lot more! :)
Do this in your next interview and see the magic!
There’s a reason why you see people get hired despite not being very competent!
Along with the skills they’re a “GOOD FIT!”.
Best of luck!
